Viewer watermark / Free, more in Pro

Every viewer sees their own name on the video.

The name moves around the frame, so a screen recording points back to the account that made it.

A lesson video playing in the MediaShield player, with the Protected by MediaShield badge in the top corner

What it does

While a protected video plays, MediaShield draws the viewer's display name and IP address over it. The overlay moves between the four corners and the centre on an interval you set, 30 seconds by default, so cropping it out of a recording costs a large part of the picture. If someone removes or hides the overlay in their browser, self-hosted video pauses and platform players are hidden, so playback stops rather than carrying on unmarked.

Setting it up

Set opacity, colour and how often it moves under Settings > Watermark. The watermark appears on videos at the Standard or Strict protection level, which you can set site-wide or per video. Around 0.3 to 0.5 opacity is visible without getting in the way of the lesson.

The limits, stated plainly

The watermark is an overlay drawn in the browser. It is not burned into the video file, so anyone who gets the source file has a clean copy, and nothing stops a viewer recording their screen. What it does is make that recording traceable to an account. On players narrower than 640 pixels, phones mostly, the IP is dropped from the overlay so the name stays readable; it is still recorded against the session.

Free and Pro

Free shows name and IP. Pro lets you choose from seven fields (username, email, IP, user ID, timestamp, site name and your own text) and adds font size and badge control. Every row, side by side.

Questions about viewer watermark

Does the watermark stop people downloading my videos?
No. It deters casual copying and identifies who made a leaked recording. It does not stop a determined person keeping a copy, and no overlay can. If you need encrypted playback, a DRM service is the right tool.
Does it work on YouTube and Vimeo videos?
Yes. The overlay sits on top of the player whatever the host: YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, Bunny Stream or your own server.
Does it change my video files?
No. Nothing is re-encoded. The overlay is drawn while the video plays and your source file is left as it is.
What do guests see?
If you turn Require Login off, an anonymous viewer's watermark reads Guest plus their IP. Only a logged-in viewer can be named.
