VdoCipher alternative

VdoCipher or MediaShield: DRM hosting or a player on your own host?

VdoCipher hosts your video and encrypts it with Widevine and FairPlay DRM. MediaShield has no DRM. It keeps the host you already use and adds member gates, a viewer watermark and analytics inside WordPress.

Protected video host

Should you switch at all?

Stay with VdoCipher if

Your contract, your licensor or your own risk assessment requires encrypted playback. DRM is the line between deterring copying and actively preventing it, and VdoCipher draws it with Widevine and FairPlay. It also hosts and delivers the video, so you run one service instead of two.

Look at MediaShield if

Your videos already live on YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, Bunny Stream or your own server and you do not want to migrate. You want login, role and enrolment gates, the member's name on the video, a cap on devices per account and completion per member, with the data in your own WordPress database.

If your requirement is that downloaders cannot get a clean file, choose VdoCipher: MediaShield cannot match real DRM. If your requirement is that only members watch, that a leak names its source, and that you keep your current host, MediaShield covers it from the free plugin.

Why people look elsewhere

The reasons that come up

  • Keep the host you have

Moving a course library to a new host is work. MediaShield plays from where the video already is, so the change happens on the WordPress page, not in your video library.

  • One vendor fewer

The protection layer is a WordPress plugin. The free plugin has no trial clock, and Pro is a yearly or lifetime licence rather than a hosting bill.

  • Data next to your members

Sessions, completion and milestones sit in your WordPress database next to the member accounts they describe, which is where course automation already runs.

Start with the honest line

VdoCipher sells DRM. That means the video is encrypted and the browser only decrypts it inside a protected path, so common downloaders and browser extensions do not get a usable file. MediaShield does not do that, and it would be wrong to suggest otherwise.

What MediaShield does is the layer around the video on your WordPress site:

  • Who can press play. Require Login is on by default. Each video can be restricted to a role, and Allowed Domains limits where your embeds play. See who can watch.
  • Who is watching. At Standard protection the member’s display name and IP sit on the video and move every 30 seconds, so a screen recording carries the name of the account that made it. See viewer watermark.
  • How many devices. Max Concurrent Streams defaults to 2 per account. See stop shared logins.
  • What happened. Sessions, completion and milestones per video and per member, in WordPress. See watch analytics.

How to decide

Ask what failure you are trying to prevent. If a single leaked file is a serious loss, for example licensed footage, exam material or content a partner requires to be encrypted, pay for DRM.

If the realistic risk is a student sharing a login or recording a lesson for a friend, the watermark and the stream limit address it directly: the friend’s device is refused, and a recording names the account. Most course owners we talk to are in the second group, and they also want to keep the host they already pay for.

What MediaShield keeps from your setup

Your videos stay on your existing host. Pro can browse and import a Bunny Stream, YouTube, Vimeo or Wistia library so you do not paste addresses one by one. Watch data stays in your own database and is included in WordPress personal data export and erasure. When you want lesson completion in LearnDash, Tutor LMS or LifterLMS, that is in Pro.

Questions people actually ask

Does MediaShield have DRM like VdoCipher?

No. MediaShield does not encrypt video. It gates playback to your members, deters casual copying and puts the viewer's name on the video so a leak can be traced. A determined copier can still record or keep a copy. If you need DRM, VdoCipher is the stronger choice.

Can I use VdoCipher and MediaShield together?

MediaShield plays YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, Bunny Stream and self-hosted files. VdoCipher is not one of its supported hosts, so in practice you would pick one or the other for a given video.

Is a watermark enough without DRM?

It depends on what you are protecting against. A watermark does not stop recording; it makes a recording traceable to the account that made it, which is what deters most students from sharing. For licensed content with contractual DRM requirements, it is not enough.

Which one costs less?

We do not quote VdoCipher prices here because they change; check their own site. MediaShield's free plugin has no time limit and Pro tiers are listed on our pricing page.

Try it before you move anything.

The free plugin has the login gate, viewer watermark, stream limit and analytics. Try it on a staging site with one real lesson.
