WordPress video player plugin

MediaShield vs Presto Player

The closest like-for-like choice: a WordPress player that plays video hosted elsewhere and can show a logged-in viewer's details as an overlay. Presto leans toward marketing video, MediaShield toward lessons only members should see.

MediaShield compared with Presto Player
Capability MediaShield Presto Player
Members-only video Free: login, role and allowed-domain gates Private videos on paid plans
Viewer details on screen Free: name and IP. Pro: seven fields Logged-in user details as an overlay
Limit devices per account Yes, default 2 Not listed
Analytics per member Free, inside WordPress Paid: dashboard and Google Analytics
Chapters, overlays, lead forms No Yes, paid plans
Page builder widgets Blocks and shortcodes only Elementor, Beaver Builder, Divi
LMS lesson completion Pro: LearnDash, Tutor LMS, LifterLMS Works with LearnDash video progression

Where Presto Player is the better choice

  • Chapters, overlays and lead-capture forms, none of which MediaShield has.
  • Native Elementor widgets and Beaver Builder and Divi modules. MediaShield has blocks and shortcodes only.
  • A larger user base and a longer track record.

Where MediaShield is

  • A per-account stream limit, so one login cannot be watched on many devices at once.
  • Watch analytics per member and per video inside WordPress, in the free plugin.
  • The member-only gate, watermark and analytics are all in the free plugin, not a paid tier.
  • Pro marks LearnDash, Tutor LMS and LifterLMS lessons complete when the video is watched.

Secure video hosting with DRM

MediaShield vs VdoCipher

VdoCipher hosts your video and encrypts it with Widevine and FairPlay DRM. MediaShield has no DRM. If stopping downloads is the requirement, VdoCipher is the stronger tool; MediaShield is for keeping the host you have and adding gates, a watermark and analytics in WordPress.

MediaShield compared with VdoCipher
Capability MediaShield VdoCipher
DRM encryption No Widevine and FairPlay
Who hosts the video Your existing host or server VdoCipher
Viewer watermark Free: name and IP. Pro: seven fields IP, email, user ID and more
Login sharing Stream limit per account, Pro flags many IPs Detects login sharing
Analytics per member Free, inside WordPress Per-user watch time and device count
Free option Free plugin, no time limit 30-day free trial
LMS Pro: LearnDash, Tutor LMS, LifterLMS LearnDash, Tutor LMS, LearnPress and others

Where VdoCipher is the better choice

  • Real Widevine and FairPlay DRM. MediaShield does not encrypt video and does not stop a determined copier.
  • Hosting and global delivery included, so there is no separate host to run.
  • A WordPress plugin with a long list of named LMS partners.

Where MediaShield is

  • Keep YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, Bunny Stream or your own server. Nothing to migrate.
  • The free plugin is not a trial: gates, watermark, stream limit and analytics with no time limit.
  • Watch data stays in your WordPress database, tied to your WordPress users.

Business video hosting

MediaShield vs SproutVideo

SproutVideo is a host with its own protection: passwords, domain whitelist, viewer logins and, from the Tree plan, a dynamic watermark and signed embeds. MediaShield is not a host. It adds those controls inside WordPress to video you host anywhere.

MediaShield compared with SproutVideo
Capability MediaShield SproutVideo
Hosting and encoding No, plays from your host Yes
Adaptive bitrate Only if your host provides it Every plan
Captions No Generated or uploaded
Dynamic watermark Free plugin Tree plan and up
Domain restriction Free Domain whitelist
Viewer login Your WordPress login, roles, LMS enrolment Restricted viewer login, Sprout plan and up
Limit devices per account Yes, default 2 Not listed

Where SproutVideo is the better choice

  • Hosting, encoding and adaptive bitrate streaming in one product.
  • Generated captions and SRT or VTT upload. MediaShield cannot show captions.
  • Live video as well as on-demand.

Where MediaShield is

  • The viewer watermark is in the free plugin, not on a higher plan.
  • Viewers are your WordPress members, so gates follow your roles and LMS enrolment.
  • Keep the host you already pay for, or use several.

Alongside MediaShield

Video hosts MediaShield plays from. Keep the host; MediaShield adds the member gate, the watermark and the analytics.

Video host MediaShield plays from

MediaShield and Vimeo

Keep Vimeo. Its paid plans can hide a video from vimeo.com and limit embeds to your domain, which stops other sites. MediaShield adds the part Vimeo cannot see: which WordPress member is watching.

What Vimeo does and what MediaShield adds
Capability MediaShield Vimeo
Hosts the video No Yes
Limit embeds to your domain Also, as a referer check Paid plans
Only logged-in members watch Yes Not a WordPress login
Member name on the video Yes Not listed
Limit devices per account Yes No
Completion per WordPress member Yes Viewer statistics, not per member

What Vimeo does that MediaShield does not

  • Hosting, encoding and delivery. MediaShield does none of that.
  • Domain-level embed privacy and "Hide from Vimeo" on paid plans.
  • Vimeo's own player controls, including speed and quality.

What MediaShield adds

  • A login, role or LMS-enrolment gate on the WordPress page.
  • The member's name on the video while it plays.
  • A limit on how many devices one account watches on at once.
  • Completion per member and per lesson in WordPress.

Video host MediaShield plays from

MediaShield and Bunny Stream

Bunny hosts and transcodes; MediaShield gates and tracks. Bunny's token authentication protects the stream itself, and its separate MediaCage DRM goes further than MediaShield can. What Bunny does not know is which of your members is watching.

What Bunny Stream does and what MediaShield adds
Capability MediaShield Bunny Stream
Hosting and transcoding No Yes
Stream token authentication Pro stores your CDN token key Yes
DRM No MediaCage, sold separately
Member gates Login, role, LMS enrolment (Pro) Not a WordPress login
Member name on the video Yes Watermarking listed, no details
Completion per member Yes Not listed

What Bunny Stream does that MediaShield does not

  • Transcoding into multiple resolutions and global delivery.
  • Token authentication and hotlink protection on the stream.
  • An enterprise multi-DRM product (MediaCage). MediaShield has no DRM.

What MediaShield adds

  • Login, role and LMS-enrolment gates on the lesson page.
  • A watermark with the member's name, and a per-account stream limit.
  • Pro browses your Bunny library and imports videos with titles and thumbnails.

Video host MediaShield plays from

MediaShield and Wistia

Wistia is built for marketing video: heatmaps, CTAs, forms and lead data. Private sharing and passwords are on every plan; playback protection is Enterprise only. MediaShield wraps Wistia embeds with member gates and a watermark.

What Wistia does and what MediaShield adds
Capability MediaShield Wistia
Hosts the video No Yes
Password and private sharing WordPress login instead Every plan
Playback protection Gates, watermark, stream limit Enterprise plan
Heatmaps Pro Business plans and up

What Wistia does that MediaShield does not

  • Marketing tools: CTAs, forms, A/B testing and lead capture.
  • Heatmaps and engagement graphs on its business plans.
  • Hosting and delivery.

What MediaShield adds

  • Member-only playback by WordPress login, role or LMS enrolment.
  • A viewer watermark and a per-account stream limit without an enterprise contract.
  • Completion tied to the WordPress member, which is what a course needs.

Questions

What people ask before choosing.

Does MediaShield stop people downloading my videos?

No, and no WordPress player can promise that. MediaShield deters casual copying and puts the viewer's name on the video, so a leaked recording points back to the account that made it. It does not stop a determined copier. If you need encrypted playback, a DRM host such as VdoCipher is the right tool.

Do I have to move my videos to use MediaShield?

No. MediaShield plays from YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, Bunny Stream or files on your own server. You add each video to the MediaShield library by pasting its address, and it plays in the protected player wherever you place it.

Why are Vimeo, Bunny Stream and Wistia listed if they are not rivals?

Because people compare them when they look for protection. They host the video; MediaShield adds the member login gate, the viewer watermark, the per-account stream limit and per-member analytics on your WordPress site. Most MediaShield sites use one of them.

What does MediaShield not have that these products do?

Captions, a quality selector, picture-in-picture, chapters and page-builder widgets. It does not host or transcode video and it has no DRM. Those gaps are listed against each product below rather than left for you to find.

Try it with the host you already use.

The free plugin has the login gate, watermark, stream limit and analytics. Add one video from your current host and watch it as a member.
