Stop shared logins / Free

One account, a set number of streams at once.

Each logged-in account can watch on a limited number of devices at the same time, two by default. A shared password stops being free for the second household.

What it does

When an account starts a video, MediaShield opens a session and the player checks in every 30 seconds. Once an account has as many active streams as you allow, the next one is refused with a message asking the viewer to close another video first. Closing a tab ends its session straight away, and a session that stops checking in drops out of the count after five minutes, so a student who shuts their laptop is not locked out for long.

Setting it up

Set the number under Settings > Concurrent Streams. Two suits most courses: a laptop and a phone. Raise it for family or team plans. A developer hook fires when the limit is reached, if you want to log it.

The limits, stated plainly

A device here is a browser on a network, so a student with several videos or tabs open on one laptop counts once. The limit stops simultaneous sharing, not a student lending their password for an evening. Guests are never counted: they have no account to share. There is no admin button to end one person's sessions yet; it is available to administrators as a REST call.

Free and Pro

The stream limit is free. Pro flags unusual viewing, such as rapid seeking, on a screen for you to review. It does not send an alert email. Every row, side by side.

Questions about stop shared logins

What happens when the limit is reached?
The new stream is refused with "Too many active streams. Please close another video first." The streams already playing carry on.
Will a student get locked out after closing their laptop?
Not for long. A session that stops checking in stops counting after five minutes, and closing a tab ends the session immediately.
Does it apply to guests?
No. Guests have no account to share, so they are exempt by design.
