MediaShield and Vimeo

Keep Vimeo. Add the member gate and the watermark.

Vimeo hosts and streams your lessons, and its paid plans can restrict where they embed. MediaShield plays those same Vimeo videos on your WordPress site behind a member login, with the viewer's name on screen and progress recorded per student.

Do you need both?

Vimeo on its own is enough if

Your videos are public marketing or free tutorials, or anyone who reaches the page is allowed to watch. Vimeo's domain-level privacy and Hide from Vimeo, on its paid plans, already stop other sites reusing the embed.

Add MediaShield if

The videos are paid lessons. You want only logged-in members, a chosen role or, with Pro, enrolled LMS students to play them, the member's name on the video, a cap on devices per account, and completion per student inside WordPress.

Vimeo's privacy settings decide which websites can show a video. MediaShield decides which people on your website can watch it, and records what each of them watched. A course usually needs both.

Why people add it

What changes on the lesson page

  • A seat is a person

Vimeo sees a page view. MediaShield sees which member pressed play, so a login shared with a friend runs into the device limit, and a recording carries the member's name.

  • Progress you can act on

Completion per student per lesson shows who stalled where. With Pro, LearnDash, Tutor LMS and LifterLMS lessons are marked complete when the video is watched.

  • Nothing changes on Vimeo

You paste the Vimeo address into the MediaShield library and place the video with a block or shortcode. Your Vimeo account, folders and settings stay as they are.

Two different questions

Vimeo’s privacy settings answer “which websites may show this video?” On its paid plans you can limit embeds to your domain and hide the video from vimeo.com, so a copied embed code fails on someone else’s site.

They do not answer “which people on my site may watch, and what did each of them watch?” That depends on your WordPress members, which Vimeo cannot see. MediaShield adds that answer without moving anything off Vimeo.

Setting it up

  1. In Vimeo, set the video’s embed privacy to your domain and turn on Hide from Vimeo, if your plan includes them.
  2. In WordPress, open MediaShield > Videos > Add New Video and paste the Vimeo address. MediaShield detects the platform and the video ID.
  3. Leave Protection Level on Standard. That turns on the login gate, the watermark and session tracking for the video.
  4. Optionally set Restrict to Role, or with Pro tick Require enrollment to watch and link the lesson.
  5. Place it with the MediaShield Video block or [mediashield id=X]. A standard Vimeo embed block for a video already in your library is wrapped as well.

Add your first video covers each field, and keep your video host lists every supported host.

What you get on the lesson page

A logged-out visitor sees the login message instead of the player. A member sees the video with their name and IP drifting between the corners and the centre. If the same account is already watching on two devices, a third is refused. Every session lands in MediaShield > Viewers with completion, and milestones fire at 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent for logged-in members. See viewer watermark and watch analytics.

With Pro, the Platforms screen connects your Vimeo account so you can browse and import videos with their titles and thumbnails instead of pasting each address. See Pro pricing.

Questions about using Vimeo with MediaShield

Can MediaShield hide my Vimeo video URL?

No. A Vimeo embed has to contain the Vimeo video ID to play, so no WordPress plugin can hide it. Turn on Vimeo's domain-level privacy so the ID is useless on other sites, and let MediaShield gate who can play it on yours. MediaShield's Hide Video Source URL setting applies to self-hosted files only.

Do I still need a paid Vimeo plan?

MediaShield works with any Vimeo video it can embed. Vimeo's own site lists domain-level embed privacy and Hide from Vimeo on its paid plans, and we recommend using them for course videos, because they close the gap MediaShield cannot: the video ID in the embed.

Does the watermark show on Vimeo videos?

Yes. The watermark is drawn over the player, so it shows on Vimeo, YouTube, Wistia and Bunny Stream videos as well as self-hosted files, at Standard or Strict protection.

Will MediaShield stop someone recording a Vimeo lesson?

No. Nothing in a browser can stop screen recording. MediaShield makes the recording traceable to the member who made it, which is what deters most sharing.

Try it on one Vimeo video.

Add one Vimeo video to the free plugin, place it on a members-only page and watch it as a student. Nothing changes on Vimeo.
