SproutVideo alternative

SproutVideo or MediaShield for protected course video?

SproutVideo is a host with its own protection tools: passwords, a domain whitelist, viewer logins and, on higher plans, a dynamic watermark. MediaShield is not a host. It puts the same kind of controls on your WordPress lesson pages for video you host anywhere.

Protected video host

Should you switch at all?

Stay with SproutVideo if

You do not have a video host yet and want one product that hosts, encodes, streams at adaptive bitrates, generates captions and protects the video. SproutVideo also does live video, which MediaShield does not touch.

Look at MediaShield if

Your students already have WordPress accounts through your course or membership plugin. You want playback gated by that login, role or LMS enrolment, the member's name on the video, a device limit per account, and completion per member in WordPress, without moving your library to a new host.

Choose SproutVideo if you want hosting, encoding, captions and protection from one vendor. Choose MediaShield if your members already log in to WordPress and you want the gate, watermark and analytics to follow those accounts.

Why people look elsewhere

The reasons that come up

  • One login for everything

Students sign in to your WordPress site once. MediaShield uses that account for the gate, the watermark name and the analytics, so there is no second viewer list to maintain.

  • Watermark without an upgrade

The moving viewer watermark is in the free plugin. Pro adds more fields, font size and badge control.

  • Keep or mix hosts

Some lessons on YouTube unlisted, some on Bunny Stream, a few files on your server: MediaShield treats them the same once they are in its library.

A host versus a layer

SproutVideo is where the video lives. It encodes your upload, streams it at the right quality for each viewer, and wraps it in protection that applies wherever the embed appears. That is a complete product, and for someone starting from nothing it is one decision instead of two.

MediaShield is where the student is. It sits on your WordPress lesson page and decides who may press play, using the login, role or course enrolment your site already manages. It does not encode, stream or caption anything. Your host does that.

What MediaShield does on the page

  • Gate by member. Require Login is on by default, Restrict to Role is set per video, and Pro adds an enrolment gate for LearnDash, Tutor LMS and LifterLMS. See who can watch.
  • Name the viewer. The watermark shows the member’s display name and IP and moves between five positions. See viewer watermark.
  • Cap shared logins. Two devices per account by default. See stop shared logins.
  • Show progress. Views, sessions and completion per member, plus milestones at 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent. See watch analytics.

Where SproutVideo is simply better

Captions are the clearest gap. MediaShield has no caption support, and a course sold to institutions often needs them. SproutVideo also gives viewers adaptive quality on weak connections, which MediaShield only passes through if your host made the quality steps. If those matter more than tying protection to your WordPress members, SproutVideo is the better choice and this page should say so.

If they do not, the free plugin plays from the host you choose and you can see the gate and watermark on a real lesson in a few minutes.

Questions people actually ask

Can MediaShield play videos hosted on SproutVideo?

SproutVideo is not one of MediaShield's supported hosts. MediaShield plays YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, Bunny Stream and self-hosted files, so using it means hosting with one of those.

Is SproutVideo's watermark the same as MediaShield's?

Both are moving overlays that name the viewer. SproutVideo's adds email, network address and session ID on its Tree plan and up. MediaShield's free watermark shows the member's name and IP; Pro adds fields such as email, user ID and timestamp. Neither is burned into the file.

Does MediaShield do captions?

No. MediaShield cannot show captions or subtitles today. If captions are a requirement, for accessibility or procurement, choose a host and player that support them.

Do I need Pro?

Not for the gate, watermark, stream limit or basic analytics. Pro adds heatmaps, realtime viewers, LMS completion and enrolment gating, library import from your hosts, CSV and PDF exports, and more watermark fields.

Try it before you move anything.

The free plugin has the login gate, viewer watermark, stream limit and analytics. Try it on a staging site with one real lesson.
